And just like that it’s 2014. Another year to (hopefully) make it right. Another year for a clean slate and start anew.
I am not big on bucket lists or life lists. Daily lists, more like a T0-Do , is a yes for me but beyond that I fail big time. It’s not that I don’t have dreams or ambitions. On the contrary I have loads but to actually jot down a plan on how to get there, NIL. Longterm for me is maybe bi-monthly? a quarter? which does not really count as long term does it? Believe you me, I have tried to do some sort of bucket list but I gave up because I was worried more about the list than how to achieve it. The list just grew to a very unrealistic number so I ditched it.
My version of a list or a new year’s resolution, if you want to call it that, is coming up with call-to-action words that will guide me throughout the year. For 2014 I chose these : Discern-Improve-Focus-Plan-Apply (DIFPA!)
Discern. There is no denying that I have accumulated a lot of stuff in 2013. In stuff I mean material stuff unrelated to my progress/improvement as a person— wife, mom, photographer/blogger, runner, etc. I am actually ashamed of my buying binge this year because I know I wasted more time organising them , worrying where to put them , than actually using them. Bad! I am so determined that this year , to the best of my ability, to really discern what I acquire and spend for. I am including time which extends to socials. My time with family should be top priority this year more than anything. Besides work-travels, family trips should be top in my travel agenda. I also noticed that I spread myself too thin and ran around like a headless chicken last year just because I wanted to accomplish so many things. Well enough. This year, in anything I do, discernment will be my middle name!
Improve . Up-cycle. This pertains to whatever I am, have and own. Not adding but just making do and for the better. It covers material and immaterial. Gist is improve the total me – health, strength, wisdom, talent , assets, etc. By doing this, I hope it will help improve, across the board, things in my life — home, family, friends, work and money. Goal : Improve wisely !
Focus. Time to step back a bit and think. Yes, be on my own and envision what needs to be done. I guess meditation will fall under this category and good luck to me because I am such a poor meditator . I cannot even sit still when I go to the salon for a hair treatment much less be on my own to just think and ponder. But, I will do what I have to do for a better me in 2014.
Plan. Back to the drawing board. Jot down— do graphs & charts , key in important dates, make plans, write down goals— the old fashioned way (on paper!) or the high-tech way (on iCloud?), it does not matter. The idea is to streamline for a simpler and more orderly life.
Apply. Can’t expound any better — everything listed above stops here . Time to just do it and do it better!
Happy New Year! Let 2014 the year of change and improvement (#improvedlife2014)
